Archetypes and polyptychs - icons in interaction

Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights is an impressive example of a polyptych and at the same time a source of inspiration for Pit Buehler's work: a multi-part wing painting that condenses into a cosmos of vision, allegory and symbolism. In a similar way, Buehler brings his iconized archetypes from the portrait series into new dialogues. This results in series in which different archetypes interact - in conflict, in resonance or in silent dialog with one another. At the same time, individual portraits also have a narrative density that can tell a story on their own. Each portrait has autonomy, but sometimes a complex narrative only unfolds in the juxtaposition. These constellations are not a mere addition of images, but an iconic condensation in which archetypes merge, mirror and overlap. This creates new stories - a visual network that places the diversity of human roles in an overarching context.
