Curriculum vitae Pit Buehler

Pit BuehlerPit Buehler was born in Zug (Switzerland) in 1972. After studying at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, he was invited by the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig to take part in the photography master class as a guest student - a decisive impetus for his artistic career.

His photography stems from a deep inner motivation: an insatiable curiosity for the unknown and the desire to stage moments in his own way. For him, the highest quality and aesthetics form the foundation of his work. Each shot is consciously composed, technically precise and characterized by a personal signature that artfully combines closeness and distance, intimacy and rapture.

He often uses a classically dark background as a stylistic device. Through his use of light and the deliberate modeling of light and shadow, his photographs appear like paintings by the old masters and open up a cosmos to the viewer that seems both familiar and remote at the same time. For Buehler, photography is far more than technique, light and composition. It is his medium of choice for visualizing characters, stories, emotions and coincidences.

His series of pictures and portraits run like a common thread through his work and grow over the decades with each new encounter. They take the viewer from the dusty paths of Africa to the glowing stage lights of large circus halls and the silence behind the scenes of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. They are microcosms and subcultures whose rules can only be understood by insiders - and yet they interweave across countries and decades to form a multi-layered whole.

The focus of his work is on free projects that are an expression of his inspiration and fascination. The commercial aspect takes a back seat; the artistic freedom he seeks in his pictures is decisive. He finances some projects himself, others are created in collaboration with institutions or are made possible by exhibitions, picture sales and grants. His work has been shown internationally, published and awarded prizes - accolades that underline his uncompromising attitude.

His photo essays provide insights into this process: honest, subjective, sometimes sarcastic and always supported by a fine sense of the absurd inherent in reality. They also contain anecdotes from more than 95 countries that Buehler has traveled to and discovered. This results in works that transform reality into compositions of iconic clarity, mysterious tension and timeless beauty.

In addition to his photographic work, Buehler also works as a business economist. This analytical, structured side of his life lends his works an additional dimension: strict rationality and structure meet intuition and artistic freedom.

Pit Buehler lives in Switzerland, but his work knows no borders. It is the expression of an inner necessity, an incessant, restless search for images that elevate quality and aesthetics to a universal language.
